Energy-efficient urban redevelopment in Lithuania

From April 2015 to September 2017 IWO e.V. together with the State Agency for Housing and Energy Efficiency in Lithuania BETA carried out the project “Energy-efficient urban redevelopment in Lithuania”, which was funded within the framework of the Advisory Assistance Programme BHP of the German Federal Ministry of the Environment. The project aimed at increasing energy efficiency in Lithuanian cities through an integrated and cross-sectoral approach. In order to achieve the greatest possible energy savings, measures such as the adaptation or renewal of the heat production and supply systems, sustainable mobility concepts, the redesign of the residential environment and the use of renewable energies at neighbourhood level were considered in an interlinked way to improve refurbishments of the existing building stock. With the help and advice of German experts, the Lithuanian cities of Siauliai, Utena and Birstonas were advised on the exemplary development of energy-efficient urban redevelopment concepts for selected neighbourhoods. The project also focused on advising the Lithuanian Ministry of the Environment on developing its own suitable support programmes for energy-efficient urban redevelopment based on the KfW programme “Energetische Stadtsanierung”.
