The 'Training of managers for urban redevelopment in Lithuania' project will be implemented from October 2017 to February 2020 funded by the European Climate Initiative (EUKI). The activities aim at developing, implementing and establishing a practice-oriented and hands-on training of managers for urban redevelopment in Lithuania. The project is designed to reach one third of Lithuania's 60 municipalities. Thus, the project contributes directly to the implementation of the recently adopted focus on an integrated approach to urban energy-efficient redevelopment in Lithuania.

In June 2016, the Lithuanian government adopted recommendations drafted in an earlier German-Lithuanian project to increase energy efficiency in urban areas, thereby giving higher priority to an integrated approach to urban development. In the future, municipalities are to develop integrated energy-efficient concepts for urban area redevelopment and appoint qualified staff for organisating, managing and monitoring the realisation of the concepts (so-called "programme managers"). The relevant authorities - the Ministry of Environment, the State Agency for Housing and Energy (BETA) and the Lithuanian Investment and Development Agency (VIPA) - are about to start implementation and there is a high demand for training and advice.

Establishing appropriate training structures will be vital for supporting the Lithuanian government’s efforts in recent years and practically implementing their long-term building refurbishment and climate strategy. Moreover, recent German-Lithuanian project activities identified the need for training and building local capacities on integrated urban redevelopment in Lithuania. This is where the project comes in, aiming at developing, implementing and establishing a hands-on vocational training programme for ‘Managers for Urban Redevelopment’ in Lithuania. The project strives to reach one third of the 60 municipalities in Lithuania at an initial phase. As part of the training, participants will receive guidance and assistance in drafting urban redevelopment concepts with regard to their respective municipalities. The project thus contributes to laying the focus on an integrated approach in energy-efficient urban redevelopment recently introduced by Lithuania’s government, starting to close the capacity gap of dedicated staff at local and national level in a sustainable manner.at local and national level in a sustainable way.
