GREEN Home

Energy Efficiency for Homeowner Associations

More energy-efficient building refurbishment for more climate protection: The Horizon 2020 GREEN Home project focuses on the decarbonisation of existing buildings owned by homeowner associations.

The European goal of a climate-neutral building stock by 2050 can only be achieved if renovation rates at least double, energy consumption is significantly reduced and energy efficiency in residential buildings is increased. This also means that the annual investment volume for energy efficiency measures in the residential building stock must be increased. Of the more than 42 million dwellings in Germany, around 23 percent are owned by homeowner associations.

The refurbishment rate of these apartments is significantly below the national average. In particular, buildings built between 1949 and 1990 have the greatest energy efficiency potential and add up to a share of around 56 percent of all German apartment buildings. This corresponds to 1,008,000 existing buildings with high renovation potential.

The Association of Property Managers Germany e. V. (VDIV), the German Business Initiative for Energy Efficiency e. V. (DENEFF), IWO and Funding for Future B. V. (F3) have started their cooperation with the "GREEN Home" project to advance the decarbonisation of the building stock of condominium associations. The project is funded by the Horizon 2020 programme of the European Union.
